The reporting requirements are consistent with the 2003 Revision of the United States (U.S.) Standard Certificate of Live Birth and the U.S. Standard Report of Fetal Death that is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)/National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) website at: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vital_certificate_revisions.htm. Our goal is to enable interoperable electronic data exchanges among electronic health record systems, U.S. vital records systems and the national statistical agency, NCHS. The use cases represented within this implementation guide (IG) describe the technical requirements for reporting birth and fetal death information from a clinical setting to the jurisdictional vital records office that sends vital records information to NCHS.
